For those who appreciate something a little more decadent, the Kobe Beef Tataki delivers a melt-in-your-mouth experience, lightly seared and paired with delicate garnishes that highlight the beef’s rich umami. Meanwhile, the Hotate Carpaccio is a refreshing and light choice, thinly sliced scallops dressed in subtle citrus and olive oil, giving a bright yet delicate taste that complements the other menu selections. Sushi enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Zuke Sake Toro, where marinated fatty salmon offers a burst of flavor in every bite, perfectly balancing the menu’s diverse offerings.

What customers say?

“ We just moved into the neighborhood and have been trying out new local restaurants — and wow, we’re so glad we found this place! This was our second time coming in, and it honestly reminded us why we couldn’t wait to come back. The food is fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with quality ingredients. You can taste the difference — they even use real crab, which is one of the many reasons we love it here. Everything we’ve tried so far has been delicious and perfectly cooked. The service makes the experience even better. Kyle and Jennifer were both so friendly, attentive, and full of great energy. They really made us feel welcome. In the kitchen, Chefs Gary and Jimmy bring not only amazing cooking skills but also great humor and personality — you can feel how much they care about what they do. There’s something about this place that just feels like home — warm, relaxed, and full of good vibes. It’s definitely become one of our favorite restaurants in the neighborhood, and we can’t wait to come back again soon! ”

“ Great quality sushi restaurant. Chef Gary is an artist. Such a pleasure enjoying his creation and interpretation of fish varieties with matching condiments and presentations. Each piece of nigiri sushi was unique with layers of flavors. Ingredients were fresh and carefully portioned to bring out the best flavors and textures. I couldn’t pick which piece was my favorite. The special vinegar sushi rice compliments the fish very well. Nothing taste overwhelming. Each piece stroke a good balance of umami. Started with refreshing Daigo shot (quail egg with fish and ponzu sauce), hotate, aoebi, Saba, waygu nigiri, Chu toro, then ventured out to Chef’s Gary recommendation for ocean trout, torotaku, butter fish, hamachi, anago, uni and tamago. Also ordered kaki fry and ika geso. The fried items were light and crispy. If I live closer I would probably come to this gem restaurant every week. Staff were tentative and friendly. Very good vibe here. ”

“ The best sushi meal you can get for around $100 for two people in sf! The staff is so nice and welcoming and you can’t go wrong with any of the nigiri - the salmon, ocean trout, soy marinated tuna and scallop are my faves. The double tuna roll and baked scallop rolls are also unreal ”

“ Best kept secret in SF; super fresh fish, homemade pickles and wasabi. Authentic sushi and intimate, friendly personal service ”

“ THIS is a traditional-style sushi restaurant with a traditionally-trained (and very experienced) chef at the helm and I am so happy for that! For those who understand the interactive aspect of sushi eating, this is YOUR place to check out. Gary-san is willing to share with those who know how to appreciate the culture and artistry beyond just coming in to dine (which is fine too if you’re looking for good value as well). The fish is all so fresh and delicious - they have a daily special menu with items directly shipped from Japan so you’re getting the same quality as you would there. I love saba (mackrel) and it was amazing so I’ll share my analysis: not fishy at all, a subtle and wonderfully complex flavor, with a pleasing texture that I look for in high-quality saba. In short, each fish we had was so distinct and had wonderful character. We loved everything so much we entrusted him as well to recommend three items by the evening’s end. A final remark: the tamago (egg) was so unique and one of the few places that I’ve seen done in the cake-style. It was a great way to end the meal, which was all-around spectacular. Will come again as a returning customer who used to go to the previous location, Daigo. For those who knew him, Gary-san used to work there too! He’s back and has plenty to share for those appreciative for sushi done RIGHT. ”

“ Lovely neighborhood gem. We enjoyed the happy hour options and a variety of Nigiri. The Saba, Hamachi, and Chutoro were excellent quality for the price. Will definitely be back! ”

“ Shoshin Sushi is one of the best sushi spots around. Gary, Jimmy, and Kyle make the whole experience feel personal. They chat with you at the counter and make you feel like a regular even if it’s your first visit. The sushi itself is top-notch, but what really sets this place apart is the atmosphere. The music is great, the vibe is relaxed, and the staff genuinely seem to enjoy what they do. Will be going back! ”

“ Some of the best sushi I’ve had in San Francisco quite some time. The staff are all very friendly and the food comes out quickly, and the menu is very creative. Make sure you order the mochi ice cream. ”
